Marrakech is three hours from Agadir on a good motorway, which is close enough that many people try it as a day trip and come back exhausted having seen a car park and a square. Two days is the honest minimum.

This private tour gives you an afternoon and a full morning in the city with a night in a riad in between, which is the part that makes the difference. You see Jemaa el-Fna as it fills at dusk, sleep inside the medina, and walk the souks in the morning before the heat and the crowds arrive.

Day by day, 2 days

  Day 1: Agadir → Marrakech → medina → Jemaa el-Fna

  We collect you in the morning and drive north through the argan forests and the Atlas foothills, reaching Marrakech in time for lunch. After checking into your riad we visit the Bahia Palace and the Koutoubia, then walk into the medina.

  Late afternoon is spent in Jemaa el-Fna as the food stalls are set up and the musicians arrive, which is a completely different square from the one you would see at midday. Dinner on a terrace overlooking it, and a night in your riad.

  Today is on foot with a licensed local guide, because the old city is a place you have to be walked through to understand.

  In Marrakech that usually means the Koutoubia minaret, the Bahia palace, the Saadian tombs and the souks behind Jemaa el-Fna, ending in the square itself as the food stalls are lit.

  The Ben Youssef madrasa housed students for four centuries, and its carved stucco and zellij are the finest surviving work of their kind in the city.

  Jemaa el-Fna is worth timing for dusk, when the food stalls are lit and the storytellers and musicians take over the square.

  Day 2: Souks → Saadian Tombs → Marrakech → Agadir

  An early start to walk the souks with a local guide while they are still working markets rather than a crowd — the metalworkers, the dyers, the leather quarter and the carpet halls, each in its own street.

  We visit the Saadian Tombs and the Mellah before lunch, then drive back to Agadir in the afternoon, reaching your hotel in the early evening.

  A local guide who lives in the city walks you through it on foot, which is the only way the medina makes sense.

• Bring layers. Days are warm and desert nights are cold in every season, and mountain passes are colder again.
• Comfortable closed shoes matter more than anything else you pack, especially for the dunes and the gorges.
• Tell us at the time of booking about dietary needs, allergies, mobility limits or anything medical, so we can plan around it properly.
• Vehicles cannot reach most riad doors inside the medina. You will walk the last few minutes with your luggage, usually with a porter and a handcart — this is normal and part of staying inside the walls.
