The Sahara is a long way from the Atlantic coast, and any operator offering it from Agadir in two days is selling you a great deal of driving. Three days is what the distance honestly requires, and the route rewards it.

You cross the Anti-Atlas by way of Taroudant, drop into the Draa valley — the longest river in Morocco and the largest palm grove in the country — and reach the dunes near Zagora on the second afternoon. The camel trek and the desert camp are the same as on any southern route; the difference is the country you pass through to get there.

Tour Itinerary

Day by day, 3 days

  Day 1: Agadir → Taroudant → Anti-Atlas → Ouarzazate

  We leave Agadir after breakfast and drive inland through the Souss valley to Taroudant, sometimes called little Marrakech for its walls and its unhurried souk. There is time to walk the ramparts and the market before lunch.

  The afternoon crosses the Anti-Atlas on a mountain road with long views, reaching Ouarzazate in the evening. Dinner and overnight in a hotel.

  Day 2: Ouarzazate → Agdz → Draa Valley → Zagora → desert camp

  South over the Tizi n'Tinifift pass and down into the Draa valley at Agdz, then along the river through an almost unbroken belt of date palms with old ksars set against the rock.

  We stop at Tamegroute for the pottery kilns and the manuscript library, reach the dunes in the late afternoon, and ride camels into the sand for sunset. Dinner, drums and a night in a desert camp.

  The afternoon belongs to the desert. Camels are met at the edge of the dunes and the ride out to camp is timed so the sun goes down while you are among the sand.

  Dinner is served at the camp, the drums come out after it, and the stars over Erg Chebbi are the reason most people remember this night above the rest.

  The tents have proper beds and rugs rather than sleeping mats, and the larger camps have private bathrooms.

  Dinner at camp is tagine cooked over the fire, and the drums usually come out once the plates are cleared.

  Day 3: Sunrise → Draa Valley → Taroudant → Agadir

  Sunrise over the dunes and breakfast at the camp, then back through the Draa valley in the morning light, which is when the palm groves look their best.

  We return west across the Anti-Atlas with a lunch stop, and reach your hotel in Agadir in the evening.

• Pricing is per group rather than per person, so the cost per head falls as your party grows — tell us how many you are and we will quote.
• Every tour is private. The itinerary below is the shape of the trip, not a fixed timetable, and your driver will adapt it to how your day is going.
• Bring layers. Days are warm and desert nights are cold in every season, and mountain passes are colder again.
• Comfortable closed shoes matter more than anything else you pack, especially for the dunes and the gorges.
• Tell us at the time of booking about dietary needs, allergies, mobility limits or anything medical, so we can plan around it properly.
• This is a long route: expect five to six hours in the vehicle on days one and three. If that is more driving than you want, the two-day Marrakech trip covers far less ground for the same time away.
