This 10 days - 9 nights private tour begins in Tangier and ends in Marrakech, and it is run for your party alone: your own driver-guide, your own vehicle, no group to keep up with and no fixed departure date.

Along the way it takes in Tangier, where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic, Chefchaouen, the blue-washed town in the Rif mountains and the Roman ruins of Volubilis, with mosaics still in place where the houses stood.

The Sahara is the centre of the trip: a camel ride into the dunes of Erg Chebbi for sunset, dinner and a night at a desert camp, and sunrise back over the sand the next morning.

Day by day, 10 days

  Day 1: Tangier → Tetouan → Chefchaouen:

  To begin your 10 days Morocco tour Tangier to Marrakech toward Chefchaouen, you will meet your guide at the port or the airport. You will pass through the Rif Mountains on your journey and take in the breathtaking vistas that this mountain range has to offer.

  When we arrive in Chefchaouen, you will have the afternoon free to explore this lovely blue and white city. You will then spend the night at a local riad or hotel.

  Day 2: Chefchaouen → Volubilis: Ancient Roman City → Meknes → Fes:

  We will drive to Volubilis, an archaeological site with the best-preserved Roman remains in this region of northern Africa, today after leaving for Fez in the morning through a number of communities in the Rif mountains. Volubilis has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1997.

  As we go to Meknes, we stop by the famous Bab el-Mansour and Moulay Ismail Tombs. Following lunch, we’ll travel to Fes. We’ll spend the night in a local Riad in Medina.

  Today is on foot with a licensed local guide, because the old city is a place you have to be walked through to understand.

  In Fes that means Fes el-Bali, the walled medina founded in the ninth century, the Chouara tanneries seen from the terraces above, the Al-Qarawiyyin mosque and university, and the mosaic and brass workshops still working in the lanes.

  The Chouara tanneries are still worked by hand in stone vats of lime and pigeon droppings, and are best seen from the leather shops' terraces above.

  Fes el-Bali is the largest car-free urban area in the world, which is why the whole day is walked and why a guide is worth having.

  Day 3: Fes Sightseeing Tour with a local guide

  We will tour Morocco’s oldest city today. We will stroll through its narrow streets and back lanes as we explore locations like the Jewish headquarters and the Royal Palace gate.

  We will go to the well-known and oldest university in the area, Al Karaouine, as well as the tanneries, the Attarine Museum, and the Moulay Idriss Mausoleum. We spend the night in the medina here.

  A local guide who lives in the city walks you through it on foot, which is the only way the medina makes sense.

  Day 4: Fes → Azrou cedar forest → Midelt → Merzouga (Erg Chebbi Dunes):

  Most of the morning will be spent admiring the picturesque forests, craggy rock faces, and Berber settlements as we cross the Middle Atlas Mountains. Today we pass via Ifrane, a winter ski resort constructed by the French in the 1928s to mimic a Swiss village.

  We next make a lunch stop at the town of Midelt, which is well-known for its fossils and apples, before continuing on to Merzouga through the Ziz Valley and Erfoud, the center of the date industry. We arrive in Merzouga in the afternoon and spend the night in a nearby hotel close to the dunes.

  Much of today is spent on the road, which is where a good deal of the country reveals itself. The route takes in Fes, the oldest of the imperial cities and the cedar forest above Azrou, home to Barbary macaques.

  Day 5: Merzouga Area → Camel Trek And Overnight Camping:

  Continuing our 10 days Morocco tour Tangier To Marrakech, you’ll start your explorations after a delicious breakfast. You’ll be going to the Gnawa village of Khamlia to meet the Gnawa people and learn about their way of life and music.

  Following that, we’ll take a journey into the Sahara Desert where we can see nomad communities who are still living in Berber tents made from the wool of their animals.

  Today, we will eat a typical local dish (Berber pizza) for lunch before returning to our hotel, where your camel will be ready for you and will be led by a knowledgeable camel man.

  Dinner will be served at the camp where you will spend the night, in the center of the tallest sand dunes, where you can enjoy the sunset and the stars. The camel ride takes about one hour and 30 minutes.

  A full day out in the Sahara: the nomad families who still live in the black tents around the erg, the old Mascara galleries where kohl was mined, the village of Khamlia and its Gnawa musicians, whose sung history came north with the caravans from Mali.

  A 4x4 run over the flat hammada beyond the dunes reaches ground no ordinary car gets to, including the dry lake bed that floods in a wet spring.

  The nomad families around the erg still move with their herds and still take visitors in for tea, which is a real household rather than a display.

  Day 6: Merzouga → Erfoud → Todgha Gorges → Dades Valley:

  The nicest sunrise of your life may be waiting for you when your camel guy wakes you up early in the morning, after which you will calmly ride your camel back to the village.

  You are bound to notice the amazing Erg Chebbi dunes’ distinctive beauty as you drive because it changes with the light throughout the day. You will go for the tallest, smallest gorges in Morocco—the Rissani, Tinghir, and Todra gorges—after breakfast and a shower in the riad.

  We’ll drive into the Dades Valley after lunch in the valley, where you can see the magnificent sand castles and the remarkable rock formations known as “monkey toes.” Dinner and breakfast are included when staying the night at our traditional guesthouse.

  The afternoon belongs to the desert. Camels are met at the edge of the dunes and the ride out to camp is timed so the sun goes down while you are among the sand.

  Dinner is served at the camp, the drums come out after it, and the stars over Erg Chebbi are the reason most people remember this night above the rest.

  The camp is far enough from any town that the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye on a clear night.

  The tents have proper beds and rugs rather than sleeping mats, and the larger camps have private bathrooms.

  Day 7: Dades valley → Kalaa M'gouna → Ouarzazate:

  You will travel through the Dades Valley to reach Kalaa M’gouna and Ouarzazate after breakfast at the hotel. The route through Dades Valley is known as the Way of the Thousand Kasbahs and offers many chances to capture some of your best travel photography.

  Today, you will have the chance to visit Berber Nomads in their caves and then take in the beautiful rock formations and green Rose Valley. We’ll make a stop in the “rose city,” Kalaat M’gouna, to buy rosewater, which will leave your linen smelling fresh for a long time after your trip is done.

  Day 8: Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah → Marrakech:

  One of Morocco’s four imperial towns, Marrakech, is where we’ll be heading today. We’ll make a brief stop at the Ouarzazate film studios so that you can visit or take photos of them. We’ll stop at the historic Kasbah at At Ben Haddou on the way to Marrakech (UNESCO as a world heritage).

  We’ll then carry on to Marrakech. We shall pass the highest road pass in North Africa on our route there. The afternoon will be in Marrakech.

  Day 9: Marrakesh Sightseeing with a Local guide

  Around 9:00 am today, your local guide will visit your hotel or riad to begin visiting Marrakech’s top attractions, including the Koutoubia mosque, the Saadian tombs, El Bahia Palace, Djemaa el Fna square, and its souk.

  We’ll drive you to Majorelle Garden after lunch, and then we’ll return you to your hotel.

  A local guide who lives in the city walks you through it on foot, which is the only way the medina makes sense.

  In Marrakech that usually means the Koutoubia minaret, the Bahia palace, the Saadian tombs and the souks behind Jemaa el-Fna, ending in the square itself as the food stalls are lit.

  Jemaa el-Fna is worth timing for dusk, when the food stalls are lit and the storytellers and musicians take over the square.

  The souks are organised by trade, so you pass a lane of dyers, then one of slipper makers, then the ironworkers, each with its own noise and smell.
