This 4-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech is the ideal crossing of Morocco for travellers who want the full Sahara experience — not just a quick dash to the dunes and back. From Fes you’ll travel over the Middle and High Atlas to the great Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga, spend two nights in the desert, then continue west through the gorges and kasbah country to Marrakech.
The extra day buys you a full 4×4 desert day among nomad families and hidden oases, plus unhurried time at the Todra and Dades gorges and UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou. It’s fully private — your own driver-guide, air-conditioned vehicle and a pace set entirely by you.
Leaving Fes around 8:00 am, you’ll head south into the Middle Atlas, stopping first in Ifrane — the alpine-style “Switzerland of Morocco” — then the Azrou cedar forest to see its wild Barbary apes.
The drive continues past Midelt and over the Tizi n’Talghemt pass, where green mountains give way to desert plateaus. Following the palm-lined Ziz Valley and the fossil town of Erfoud, you’ll reach the Erg Chebbi dunes by late afternoon — then ride a camel to your desert camp for a tagine dinner and Berber music under the stars.
After sunrise over the dunes and breakfast at camp, a full 4×4 desert tour takes you deep into the Merzouga region. You’ll meet a semi-nomadic Berber family, visit the old Mifis mines, and stop for tea with Bedouins behind the dunes.
In Khamlia village you’ll hear the hypnotic sub-Saharan rhythms of Gnawa music, before your guide shows you the best of the Erg Chebbi sand sea. Return to your accommodation near the dunes to relax before a second desert night.
Rise early for one more desert sunrise, then travel by camel or 4×4 back to Merzouga and on to the historic market town of Rissani — home to one of Morocco’s largest and most authentic souks (liveliest on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays).
Following the Tafilalet oasis you’ll reach Tinghir and the Todra Gorge, where sheer orange cliffs nearly 300 metres high rise above a cool river — ideal for a short walk. The day ends in the green Dades Valley, with dinner and an overnight stay in a local hotel or riad.
Your final day follows the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs through the Skoura palm grove to Ouarzazate, “the Hollywood of Africa,” with its film studios and Taourirt Kasbah.
The highlight is the ancient fortified ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and backdrop to films from Gladiator to Lawrence of Arabia. After lunch nearby, you’ll cross the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m), pausing for panoramic views, before your 4-day desert tour from Fes to Marrakech ends with a drop-off at your Marrakech accommodation.

Four days is the sweet spot for a Fes to Marrakech desert tour: enough time to cross the Atlas, sleep twice in the Sahara and really explore nomad country — without the long single-day drives that make shorter trips tiring.
You’ll see Barbary apes in the Azrou cedar forest, ride camels over the Erg Chebbi dunes, wander the Dades and Todra gorges, and stand inside UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou — all privately, at your own pace, with a driver-guide who tailors each day to you.
Yes — every tour is 100% private by default. It’s just your group, your driver-guide and your own vehicle, so you experience Morocco entirely at your own pace. Stop whenever you like for photos, a mint tea or a closer look at a village or viewpoint.
Prefer to share costs? We also run small-group departures on popular routes — just contact us and we’ll match you to the right option.
Absolutely. This is your trip — we can adjust the pace, swap or upgrade accommodation, add nights, and build in extra stops or activities. For the smoothest planning, let us know any changes at least two weeks before departure, though we’ll always do our best with last-minute requests too.
The per-person price goes down as your group grows, because the private vehicle and driver-guide are shared across more travellers. Send us your exact numbers and dates and we’ll send back a clear, all-in quote per person.
Usually not — if anything the opposite. We hand-pick the best riads and desert camps, and the good ones fill up fast, especially in high season (spring and autumn). Booking early secures the best accommodation and a smoother trip.
That said, we do take last-minute bookings when availability allows — message us with your dates and we’ll tell you honestly what’s possible.
Yes. Morocco is one of the most welcoming and stable countries in the region, and tourism is central to its economy, so visitor safety is taken seriously — including dedicated tourist police and government-accredited guides.
On a private tour you’re looked after door to door by a driver-guide who knows the routes and the local etiquette. Serious crime is rare and comparable to many European destinations; normal travel common sense is all that’s needed. Morocco is a great choice for couples, families and solo travellers alike.
Once we’ve agreed an itinerary that works for you, a small deposit secures your dates with Let’s Visit Morocco (every tour on the site can be tailored to your needs). You simply pay the remaining balance at the start of your tour in Morocco — no large upfront payment required.
