5-Day Marrakech Desert Tour to Merzouga & Erg Chebbi Dunes
A private 5-day desert tour from Marrakech to the Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga — cross the High Atlas, sleep in a Sahara camp after a sunset camel trek, and explore Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades and Todra gorges at an unhurried pace.
About This Tour
5 days - 4 nights · Marrakech → Merzouga
This 5-day Marrakech desert tour is a private, unhurried journey from the Red City to the golden Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga — and back — designed so you actually get to enjoy each stop rather than race past it. Over five days you’ll cross the High Atlas Mountains via the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka pass, wander the UNESCO-listed kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, follow the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, and trek by camel into the Sahara Desert for a night under the stars.
Unlike rushed 3-day trips, this desert tour from Marrakech gives the Dades Valley, the towering Todra Gorge and the nomad country around Merzouga the time they deserve. It runs daily, is fully private (just your group, your driver-guide and your pace), and can be tailored for couples, families and small groups.

Day 1: Marrakech → Atlas Mountains → Ait Ben Haddou → Ouarzazate → Dades Valley
Your desert adventure begins with a morning pickup from your Marrakech riad. Climbing the High Atlas Mountains, you’ll crest the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2,260 m) with its snow-dusted peaks and switchback views, pausing for photos and a mint tea among traditional Berber villages.
Next comes the highlight of the day: Ait Ben Haddou, a fortified earthen city and UNESCO World Heritage Site made famous by films such as Gladiator and Game of Thrones. You’ll have time to climb its clay alleys for a sweeping valley panorama before continuing to Ouarzazate, “the Hollywood of Africa.”
The afternoon drive follows the scenic Rose Valley and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs into the Dades Valley, where dramatic rock formations glow at sunset. Dinner and overnight in a comfortable kasbah hotel.
The distance today is real, but so is the payoff: the road takes in Marrakech, the red city at the foot of the High Atlas and the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the highest surfaced road in North Africa, which climbs to 2,260 m through Berber villages clinging to the slopes.
Nao ha horario a cumprir alem do vosso, por isso as boas paragens ficam com o tempo que merecem.

Day 2: Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Merzouga → sunset camel trek & desert camp
After breakfast you’ll enter the Todra Gorge, where sheer 300-metre canyon walls rise on either side of a cool mountain river — a favourite of hikers and rock climbers. From here the landscape opens out as you drive south through palm oases toward Merzouga, gateway to the Erg Chebbi dunes.
In the late afternoon you’ll swap the vehicle for a camel and set off on a sunset camel trek across the Sahara, the dunes shifting from gold to deep amber as the light fades. You’ll reach your desert camp in time to settle into your tent, share a tagine dinner and listen to Berber drums beneath a sky thick with stars. Overnight in the heart of the dunes.
The desert takes the second half of the day: a camel ride into the dunes timed for the light, with the sand turning from gold to deep orange as the sun drops.
Dinner is at camp under a sky with no light pollution at all, usually with drums around the fire, and the night is spent in a tent before the sunrise back over the dunes.
Dinner at camp is tagine cooked over the fire, and the drums usually come out once the plates are cleared.
The tents have proper beds and rugs rather than sleeping mats, and the larger camps have private bathrooms.

Day 3: Merzouga 4x4 desert day — Khamlia Gnawa music, nomads & Erg Chebbi
Wake early for one of the most memorable sunrises of the trip as the sun lifts over the Erg Chebbi dunes. After breakfast at camp, an off-road 4x4 desert tour takes you deeper into nomad country.
You’ll visit Khamlia village to hear the hypnotic, sub-Saharan rhythms of Gnawa music, meet a semi-nomadic Berber family for tea, and learn how life works out here on the edge of the Sahara. Lunch is a local speciality — the famous Berber “medfouna” pizza — before you explore a desert oasis and, if you wish, try sandboarding or a quad-bike ride. Return to your riad to relax by the pool or take a quiet sunset stroll on the dunes. Dinner and overnight near Merzouga.
A full day out in the Sahara: the nomad families who still live in the black tents around the erg, the old Mascara galleries where kohl was mined, the village of Khamlia and its Gnawa musicians, whose sung history came north with the caravans from Mali.
A 4x4 run over the flat hammada beyond the dunes reaches ground no ordinary car gets to, including the dry lake bed that floods in a wet spring.
Sunset is watched from a high dune, and the sand shifts through gold, orange and finally a deep red as the light goes.
The Mascara galleries are old hand-dug workings where kohl was mined, and the tunnels run further into the rock than you would expect.

Day 4: Merzouga → Rissani → Draa Valley → Ouarzazate
Today you leave the dunes behind and head for Rissani, the lively market town at the heart of the Tafilalet — birthplace of Morocco’s ruling dynasty and home to one of the country’s most authentic souks, brimming with spices, textiles and dates.
From there a spectacular drive carries you along the Draa Valley, past Alnif, Tazarine and N’kob, with endless palm groves, ancient kasbahs and the peaks of the Anti-Atlas as your backdrop. You’ll stop often for photos and lunch at your leisure before reaching Ouarzazate, famed for its film studios. Check in, unwind and enjoy dinner in this atmospheric desert city. Overnight in Ouarzazate.
E una giornata di strada nel senso migliore: il paesaggio cambia di continuo e si passa per Merzouga, the last village before the sand and Rissani, the old caravan capital of Sijilmassa and its covered souk.
Las paradas las decides tu: un mirador, un cafe de carretera, un pueblo que merece diez minutos a pie.

Day 5: Ouarzazate → Atlas Studios → High Atlas → Marrakech
Start with a short tour of Ouarzazate, including the option to visit the legendary Atlas Studios — one of the world’s largest film sets, where blockbusters and series have been shot for decades.
Then it’s back over the High Atlas Mountains, with a lunch stop and plenty of viewpoints, before your 5-day desert tour from Marrakech comes full circle. You’ll be dropped at your Marrakech accommodation in the evening, camera full and the Sahara still in your mind.
E um dia de estrada no melhor sentido: a paisagem muda a toda a hora e passa-se por Ouarzazate, the desert film town behind the Atlas Studios and the Taourirt kasbah and the Tizi n'Tichka pass, the highest surfaced road in North Africa, which climbs to 2,260 m through Berber villages clinging to the slopes.
Le soste le decidete voi: un punto panoramico, un caffe lungo la strada, un paese che merita dieci minuti a piedi.

Why Book This Tour
What makes it worth the time
Because five days is the sweet spot. A 5-day Marrakech desert tour gives you the full arc of southern Morocco — the High Atlas passes, UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou, the Dades and Todra gorges, and two unforgettable nights around Merzouga’s Erg Chebbi dunes — without the punishing long drives of shorter trips.
Every departure is private and tailor-made: your own driver-guide, your own pace, and the freedom to stop wherever a view, a village or a photo calls. It’s the ideal way to experience the Sahara Desert as more than a checklist — as a genuine, relaxed adventure from Marrakech to the dunes and back.

Practical travel notes
- Pricing is per person and drops as your group grows — the more of you travel together, the lower the price each. Tell us your group size for an exact quote.
- Want more time in the desert? Any itinerary can be extended or customised — add a night in the dunes, a second camp, or extra sightseeing stops. Just ask.
- Driving times are estimates for the road only — they don’t count photo stops, sightseeing or meals. Because the tour is private, you set the pace and we stop whenever you like.
- One day involves a longer drive to link the desert with the cities — we break it up with scenic stops, viewpoints and a relaxed lunch so it never feels rushed.
- Comfortable 4x4 vehicles seat up to four adults; for five or more we provide a spacious air-conditioned minivan — always private to your group.
- We suggest an 8:00 am start on Day 1 to make the most of the light and the drive, but pickup time is flexible — tell us what suits you.
- Sandboards are free to use at your desert camp — try the dunes at sunrise or sunset. Quad bikes and buggy rides can be arranged on request.
- Solo travellers and couples are welcome — join a shared small-group departure to keep costs down, or keep it fully private. Both options are available on request.
Frequently Asked Questions
Questions about this tour
Are these tours private?
Yes — every tour is 100% private by default. It’s just your group, your driver-guide and your own vehicle, so you experience Morocco entirely at your own pace. Stop whenever you like for photos, a mint tea or a closer look at a village or viewpoint.
Prefer to share costs? We also run small-group departures on popular routes — just contact us and we’ll match you to the right option.
Can the itinerary be customised or changed?
Absolutely. This is your trip — we can adjust the pace, swap or upgrade accommodation, add nights, and build in extra stops or activities. For the smoothest planning, let us know any changes at least two weeks before departure, though we’ll always do our best with last-minute requests too.
Does the price change with group size?
The per-person price goes down as your group grows, because the private vehicle and driver-guide are shared across more travellers. Send us your exact numbers and dates and we’ll send back a clear, all-in quote per person.
Are last-minute bookings cheaper?
Usually not — if anything the opposite. We hand-pick the best riads and desert camps, and the good ones fill up fast, especially in high season (spring and autumn). Booking early secures the best accommodation and a smoother trip.
That said, we do take last-minute bookings when availability allows — message us with your dates and we’ll tell you honestly what’s possible.
Is Morocco safe for tourists?
Yes. Morocco is one of the most welcoming and stable countries in the region, and tourism is central to its economy, so visitor safety is taken seriously — including dedicated tourist police and government-accredited guides.
On a private tour you’re looked after door to door by a driver-guide who knows the routes and the local etiquette. Serious crime is rare and comparable to many European destinations; normal travel common sense is all that’s needed. Morocco is a great choice for couples, families and solo travellers alike.
Booking, deposit and payment
Once we’ve agreed an itinerary that works for you, a small deposit secures your dates with Let’s Visit Morocco (every tour on the site can be tailored to your needs). You simply pay the remaining balance at the start of your tour in Morocco — no large upfront payment required.
