5 Days in Morocco: 2027 Itineraries Through the Sahara

Five days is the length at which Morocco stops being a dash. Three days reaches the Sahara; five days lets you arrive at it without having spent the whole trip in a car, and leaves room for the places between that most short itineraries drive straight past.

It is also the most common length we are asked about, usually by people with a working week of leave and a weekend either side. Here is what genuinely fits into it in 2027.

Why five changes the trip

On a three-day desert route, two of the three days involve long drives. On five, that ratio flips. You get a second night in the south, which means a morning that does not begin with packing the car.

The practical difference shows up in the places you stop rather than pass: the Todra gorge with time to walk into it, Skoura’s palm oasis, the Dades with an afternoon in it, a full sunset and a full sunrise at Erg Chebbi instead of one or the other.

Five days also makes the Marrakech to Fes crossing comfortable, and that is the single best thing you can do with the length.

Route 1: Marrakech to Fes through the Sahara

The route we recommend most often at this length, and the one most people search for.

Day one crosses the Tizi n’Tichka, stops at Ait Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, and ends in the Dades valley. Day two runs through the Todra gorge and the Ziz palmeries to Merzouga, with camels into the dunes and a night in camp. Day three is sunrise over Erg Chebbi, then time in the desert proper: the nomad families in the hamada, the old Rissani market, fossil workshops at Erfoud. Day four heads north through Midelt and the cedar forests into Fes. Day five is Fes itself, which deserves a full day and barely gets one.

No road is repeated. You cross the Atlas, the Sahara and the Middle Atlas, and you finish in the oldest medina in the country.

Route 2: Marrakech out and back, with the south properly

If your flights are fixed into and out of Marrakech, five days buys you the thing the three-day version cannot afford: time in the valleys.

The shape is Marrakech to the Dades, Dades to Merzouga, a full day around Erg Chebbi, then two days back through Ouarzazate and the Atlas with stops you would otherwise skip — the Fint oasis, the Skoura palmeries, the film studios if that appeals.

Yes, you drive the Tichka twice. In exchange the middle of the trip is unhurried.

Route 3: five days with a theme

At five days there is enough time to point the trip at something specific rather than cover ground.

Morocco sits on the migration corridor between Europe and West Africa, and the run from the Atlas down to the desert edge crosses four distinct habitats in two days. The 5-day Sahara birding tour is built around that, with the desert larks, sandgrouse and wheatears of the hamada, and the Tagdilt track at dawn.

The same logic applies to photography, food or architecture. Tell us the interest and we will build the five days around it.

If you have four days

Four is a real length, not a compromised five. It does the Marrakech to Fes crossing at a slightly brisker pace, or an out-and-back from Marrakech with one unhurried day in the desert.

Options: Marrakech to Fes in four days, the reverse from Fes, or Marrakech to Merzouga and back.

If you are landing at Casablanca rather than Marrakech, four days covers the Atlantic coast, Rabat and the road south: Casablanca to Marrakech in four days.

What five days will not do

It will not cover Marrakech, Fes, Chefchaouen and the desert. Chefchaouen is four hours north of Fes, and adding it means losing the Sahara or losing both cities.

It will not cover the Atlantic coast and the Sahara in the same trip at any sensible pace. Essaouira is three hours west of Marrakech, in the opposite direction to everything else.

If either of those is non-negotiable, you want seven days.

Timing in 2027

April, May, September and October are the four strongest months, and on a five-day trip the weather matters because you are in the south for three of them.

March and November work well, with cooler desert nights and a chance of rain in the gorges.

Summer in the Dades and Merzouga means 40°C-plus. We shift the driving to the early morning and the late afternoon and it is perfectly manageable, but it changes the shape of the day.

Winter is cold at night and spectacular by day, with snow on the Atlas peaks above the palm groves. Ramadan falls around early February to early March 2027, with the exact dates set locally by the moon.

Easter Sunday is 28 March 2027, which makes late March and early April the busiest spring window. If those are your dates, book earlier than you otherwise would.

A note on flights

On a five-day trip, an open-jaw booking is worth real money in time. Into Marrakech and out of Fes, or the reverse, removes an entire return drive — a fifth of your holiday. Most airlines price it the same as a return. Check before you book, because once the flights are fixed the route is largely fixed with them.

Common questions

Is 5 days enough for Morocco?

It is enough to cross from Marrakech to Fes through the Sahara without rushing, or to do one city and the desert with time in the valleys. It is not enough for both imperial cities plus the north or the coast.

What is the best 5-day Morocco itinerary?

Marrakech to Fes through the desert. Day one to the Dades, day two to Merzouga, day three around Erg Chebbi, day four north through the cedar forests to Fes, day five in Fes. Nothing is driven twice.

Can you see Marrakech, Fes and the desert in 5 days?

Yes, as a one-way crossing with a day in each city at either end. What you cannot do in five days is see both cities properly and the desert properly. Something gets a half-day.

Is 5 days better than 3 for the Sahara?

Considerably. Three days gives you one night in the desert region and two long drives. Five gives you a full day at Erg Chebbi, time in the Todra gorge, and mornings that do not start by getting back in the car.

Do I need to fly in and out of the same airport?

No, and you should try not to. An open-jaw flight into Marrakech and out of Fes saves a full day on a five-day trip and usually costs the same as a return.

Can you add a day or two to a 5-day tour?

Yes. Everything is private, so these routes stretch and contract around your dates. Five becomes six by giving the extra night to the desert or to Fes, and we will tell you which suits what you want to see.
